A widening project aimed at reducing congestion and improving safety on I-71 in Carroll and Gallatin counties is in progress. The project will widen I-71 from its configuration of two lanes in each direction, to three lanes.
A traffic switch on I-71 northbound and southbound between Exit 55 (KY 1039) and Exit 57 (Sparta) has occurred. Motorists will shift toward the median and then shift back over to the existing roadway. This traffic pattern is expected to be in place for several weeks. This traffic pattern is expected to be in place for several weeks.
***
This widening project includes a bridge replacement over KY 47. The current bridges will be replaced with a new, single span bridge matching the median widening throughout the project area.
The speed limit in the work zone is now reduced to 55 MPH. Law enforcement will be on-site to ensure compliance.
The project has an expected completion date of Nov. 1, 2026. Learn more about the project here.

The scaffolding plan for the bridge has received final approval. Starting the week of Sept. 21, crews will begin installing scaffolding to prepare for floor beam repairs.
Once those repairs officially begin, we’ll provide another update along with a revised completion date for the overall project. Floor beam repairs are the final phase of work for the project.
***
A temporary speed limit reduction of 55 MPH is currently in place. A queue warning system has also been installed on both sides of the river to warn motorists of any stopped or slowed traffic on/near the bridge.
Eastbound Traffic (drivers heading from Indiana to Kentucky):
-
A right lane closure is in place before the bridge approach. Once you’re on the bridge, all lanes are open.
Westbound Traffic (drivers heading from Kentucky to Indiana):
-
Traffic is utilizing the left lane beginning at the Petersburg exit to past the truss of the bridge.
T1 Steel Repairs:
-
The scheduled T1 steel repairs have been completed.
Looking Ahead:

A resurfacing project on I-71 from the Boone/Gallatin County line to the I-71 and I-75 interchange is in progress.
Milling/paving operations are now complete. The application of high friction surface treatment on the I-71 northbound to I-75 northbound ramp still remains. We will advise once this work is scheduled.

A maintenance repair project is in progress on I-71 from the Trimble County line to the Gallatin County line.
Crews have been hard at work addressing the roughest sections of pavement along this corridor. The most serious base failures have already been repaired, and contractors are now milling and resurfacing those problem spots to help reduce potholes and improve ride quality.
The majority of resurfacing work on this project is expected to take place Sunday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. requiring a single lane closure during working hours. All lanes will reopen at 8 a.m.
***
This is a maintenance repair project, not a full resurfacing of all lanes. These operations will be limited to the mainline interstate. Shoulders and on/off ramps will not be included with this project.
A reduced speed limit of 55 MPH will be enforced throughout the work zone, with law enforcement on-site to ensure compliance.
No lane closures will be permitted during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
The project began on Friday, Aug. 8, with completion expected by Nov. 30, 2025. Learn more about the project here.

A T-1 steel repair project on the Combs-Hehl Bridge, which spans the Ohio River between Kentucky and Ohio, will begin on Sunday night, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m.
This work follows a federally required inspection of older bridges built with “T-1” steel. During a 2023 inspection, 300 welds were tested, and 16 locations were identified for future repair. While not an immediate safety concern, these repairs will proactively address the findings and ensure the bridge remains safe for years to come.
Crews will begin work on the eastbound portion of the bridge. On Sunday night, Sept. 28, at 8 p.m., the contractor will begin with a single lane closure, followed by a double lane closure at 9 p.m. All work will be completed by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29, with traffic shifted to the far right lane throughout this period. This initial overnight work will allow crews to apply temporary striping to narrow lanes in preparation for the steel repair work.
Once in place, lanes will be reconfigured from three 12-foot lanes to two 10-foot lanes and one 11-foot lane. This setup will create room for barrier wall placement while minimizing impacts to traffic. Additional lane closures may be required for crane operations and steel plate installation. KYTC will issue updates when those closures are scheduled. Eastbound work is expected to take about 45 days to complete.
***
When eastbound repairs are finished, crews will shift to the westbound side using the same traffic plan. More details will be provided closer to the start of that phase. Westbound work is also expected to take about 45 days.
In addition to the T-1 steel work, crews will also complete several stringer repairs. These repairs were added to the project to further enhance the long-term safety and durability of the structure.
A queue warning system will be installed on both sides of the river to alert motorists of slowed or stopped traffic on or near the bridge. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the work zone for the duration of the project.
Learn more about the project here. Weather permitting, the overall project has an expected completion date of February 2026.
